Cambridge-William F. Barker, 83, of Cambridge, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, December 30, 2018 at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

Born September 8, 1935 in Norwalk, CT, he was the son of the late Frederick and Florence (Carmen) Barker.

Following his education, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army serving with the 2nd Armored Division in Germany. 

In 1957, he began his career as a carpenter working for his father’s business.  In 1962, Bill went to work for Jack Faxon Construction Co.  He became a foreman 2 years later and a shareholder in the company after 4 years with the company.  In 1975, he began working for himself in the carpentry business.  He and his family moved to Cambridge in 1979.  In 1980, he worked for Merriman’s Saw Mill and built many fine structures.  Prior to that, he lived in Round Ridge, NY and was a member of the Volunteer Fire Dept.  He served 2 terms as Fire Chief and at that time was the youngest in the department.

He enjoyed modified race cars and was a pitman to Ernie Marshall and worked on the cars at many racetracks throughout the northeast.

In 1990, he became a member of the Captain Maxson Post 634 American Legion. He retired from contracting in 1995 and went to work for the Windy Hills Golf Course in Greenwich for 11 years.

Bill is survived by his wife, Loretta Portwine Barker; his children, Charlene Barker  and Duane (Michelle) Barker; a brother, Robert Barker; a sister, Nancy (Nick) Buchko.  He is also survived by nieces and nephews

Funeral services will be held in May 2019 at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.  Date and time will be announced.
