Sarah Grace (Abbott) Hampton
Indianapolis, IN Sarah Grace (Abbott) Hampton aka “Sally”, 99, died peacefully, Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Forest Creek Nursing Home where she had resided for several years.
She was the widow of Lt. Col John A. Hampton who died in 1980.
Born Friday, July 29, 1910 in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of William H. and Grace (Mercer) Abbott. Sally grew up in Cambridge, NY and graduated from Cambridge Union School. She then attended Wheelock College in Boston, MA and earned her Bachelors of Arts, in education, graduating in 1934.
After teaching elementary education for several years, she married John A. Hampton on December 4, 1937 and began raising a family. Sally recently received her 70 year award for being a member of the Ondawa-Cambrige Chapter of the DAR. She was twice a Past-Regent of the organization. She also enjoyed being a member of the Cambridge Book Club.
A brother, George M. Abbott, predeceased her.
Sally is survived by four sons and their wives, John A. Hampton and Fran of Owasso, OK, William A. Hampton and Betsey of Indianapolis, IN, Douglass S. Hampton and Kathy of Kinston, NC and Andrew A. Hampton of Baltimore, MD; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; niece, Martha B. Abbott and cousin David Findley and wife Mary.
The family will return to Cambridge where they will receive friends and relatives on Friday, January 29, 2010 from 4 to 6 PM at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main Street.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 30 at 10 AM at St. Patrick’s Church, 17 South Park Street, Cambridge. She will be buried beside her beloved husband at Woodlands Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Ondawa-Cambridge DAR American History Award Fund, % Carole Dilley, 17 S. Union Street, Cambridge, NY 12816.
Sally must have been a great lady because she certainly raised a wonderful family. It was a pleasure working with you. Elizabeth
Doug, I just want you to know that I am thinking about you and the whole Hampton “clan”. I love you dearly, and though the loss of your Mom was difficult, I believe she is at peace and I know you all will remember her with love. She is with your Dad. What a great family she had! She would love to have been with you all together there….you have to suspect she was!
Hi to all the Hamptons whom I hardly ever see!! Love, Sis-in-law Linda
